BirthRoot Community Doula Alliance #

BirthRoot Community Doula Alliance is a community-based organization in Erie, PA, dedicated to providing comprehensive, culturally responsive doula care. Their mission is to support birthing individuals—especially Black and brown families—through pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and bereavement. Services include emotional, physical, and informational support, aiming to improve maternal health outcomes and empower families during their birthing journey.

Services Offered #

BirthRoot Community Doula Alliance provides a range of supportive services for families:

  • Birth Doula Support: Continuous emotional and physical support during labor and delivery.
  • Postpartum Doula Care: Assistance with newborn care, breastfeeding support, and emotional well-being in the postpartum period.
  • Bereavement Support: Compassionate care for families experiencing pregnancy or infant loss.
  • Certified Lactation Counseling: Professional guidance to support breastfeeding families.
  • Infant Nutrition Education: Information and support for feeding choices and practices.
  • Perinatal Education and Advocacy: Classes and resources to empower families with knowledge and support.

Community Partnerships #

BirthRoot collaborates with local organizations to enhance the support network for families:

  • UPMC Hamot: Providing training for doulas to become certified lactation counselors.
  • Erie City Moms: Organizing community events such as baby showers and meal support for new families.
  • AHN Saint Vincent Hospital: Partnering to offer warm handoff programs for families in need of doula support.

Training and Certification Opportunities #

BirthRoot offers training programs for individuals interested in becoming doulas, with a focus on increasing the representation of Black and brown doulas in the Erie community. These programs aim to remove financial and logistical barriers to certification.
