Hot weather and high humidity make it hard for our bodies to naturally cool themselves. If our bodies cannot cool themselves they can become dangerously hot. This can cause injury, illness or death.
Signs of heat illness or heat stroke include:
- A body temperature of 104°F (40°C) or higher
- Headaches
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Muscle cramps or weakness
- Skin redness and warmth
- Fast breathing or fast heartbeat
- Passing out
- Confusion or trouble thinking clearly
- Trouble walking
- Seizures
If someone has signs of heat illness it is important to get help right away by calling 911.
You can prevent heat illness by:
- drink plenty of liquids before and during activity in hot, sunny weather
- wear light-colored, loose clothing and use sunscreen when outdoors.
- come indoors to rest and hydrate
- open windows and use fans to get air movement
- schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day in the early morning or evening
