Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation for a booster shot of COVID-19 vaccines in specific populations. The&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-takes-additional-actions-use-booster-dose-covid-19-vaccines\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) authorization external icon<\/a>&nbsp;and CDC\u2019s recommendation for use are essential steps forward as we work to stay ahead of the virus and keep Americans safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at six months or more after their initial series:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>65 years and older<\/li><li>Age 18+ who live in&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/booster-shot.html#long-term-care\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-term care settings<\/a><\/li><li>Age 18+ who have&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/people-with-medical-conditions.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underlying medical conditions<\/a><\/li><li>Age 18+ who work or live in&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/booster-shot.html#HighRisk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high-risk settings<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the nearly 15 million people who received the Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are recommended for those 18 and older and vaccinated two or more months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are now booster recommendations for all three available COVID-19 vaccines in the United States. Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose. Some people may prefer the vaccine type they originally received, and others may prefer a different booster. CDC\u2019s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for booster shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millions of people are newly eligible to receive a booster shot and will benefit from additional protection. However, today\u2019s action should not distract from the critical work of ensuring that unvaccinated people take the first step and get an initial COVID-19 vaccine. More than 65 million Americans remain unvaccinated, leaving themselves \u2013 and their children, families, loved ones, and communities\u2013 vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Available data right now shows that all three of the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/different-vaccines.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19 vaccines approved or authorized in the United States<\/a>&nbsp;continue to be&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/effectiveness\/work.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly effective<\/a>&nbsp;in reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, even against the widely circulating&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/delta-variant.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delta variant<\/a>. Thus, vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself, reduce the spread of the virus, and help prevent new variants from emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following is attributable to Dr. Walensky:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese recommendations are another example of our fundamental commitment to protect as many people as possible from COVID-19. The evidence shows that all three COVID-19 vaccines authorized in the United States are safe \u2013 as demonstrated by the over 400 million vaccine doses already given.
